- Which topics would you like to see on the seminar? [please be specific]
I was thinking of requesting Guardian to put together a small online seminar/crash course on Maths concepts to help ScoreChase members [for a small fee per person]. The thought actually came to me since it seems quite a few members find the need to brush up concepts on Math [From discussion on this thread http://www.scorechase.com/gmat/showthread.php?p=47543].
I guess 1 seminar would have 3 topics and would last about 2 hrs [about 45 min each topic].
[If there are more than 3 requested topics, we can have multiple seminars spanning those topics]

Thanks Hagrid for the good offer. I am positive people will find it useful. Instead of a scattered resource it would be a single source of Info.
Personally Probability is my weak area followed by Coordinates ,percentages .
Any tips to decipher word problems easily and mastering Data Sufficiency techniques would be the icing I would require on my cake.
Thanks again for your offer.
This is awesome, my troubles actually stem from the word problems themselves. I have a tough time deciphering what the question is asking most of the time.
Some distance problems as well as age problems would help as well.
Thanks again
So far topics asked for:
- Permutations (decentscore, ace_chase)
- Probability (saege, decentscore, ace_chase)
- Coordinate (saege, decentscore, ace_chase)
- Percentages (saege)
- Distance/Time (iDug)
- Age problems (iDug)
- Simple and compound interest (decentscore)
- Statistics (decentscore)
- Number Theory (Sonu)
- More Suggestions?
As Hagrid said, there would be about 3 topics in each seminar (depends on how big the topics are). I personally believe that probablity can be mastered only once permutations/combinations are covered ..... and covering both on the same day would mean less throughput [both are difficult to understand]. So I would recommend we put permutations/combinations in the first seminar and probability in a later seminar. What do you say?
Also, it seems like not a lot of people see this post, I would really appreciate if you could let a few other people know about the seminar so that they can also put forth their preference.
Hi
May be if you advertise it in BOLD letters or atleast in a different colour which would inturn be eye catching the turn aroun would be higher. Thats only my suggestion.
Probability
Permutations & combination
Standard deviation
Equation of lines, parabolas, etc
tougher volume, angle problems
compound interest equation
My preferences would be
Permutations and combination
Probability
Quadratic equations and co-ordinate geometry
Added these suggestions on the top post.
Interestingly permutations and probability seem to be the choice of the people. However, I am a little skeptical of having both in one seminar. These are tough topics and may cause information overload. Lets c, we will try to do this:
- either split permutations and probability in 2 different seminars and have some easier topics [coordinate, quadratic etc] in the first
- Or just cover permuts and probab on the same day [only 2 topics].
I would like to go with the first one ...
This is the list so far, looks like permut, probab and coordinate are winners:

So when are we starting?
Hagrid will make an announcement soon. I am targetting the weekends of Mar 15 or 22nd.
The timing should be around 10:00am EST. So that audiences both in US and India can attend.
I would
Guardian
I am from middle east so our time is 8 Hrs ahead of EST. and we have holidays only on Friday and Saturday. Sunday is a working day for us.
Any way if there is a possibility to reschedule please do . But don't do it by sacrificing other people's conveninet time . I will try to refer back the offline notes if there are any.
Thanks for the support.
Saege, thanks for letting us know. Wouldnt 10AM EST on saturday mean 6:00pm in the saturday evening for you right? Since saturday you are on leave, you can attend?
Let me know.
The time hasnt been decided yet, so dont worry about it, we can work around a bit to ensure India, US, middle-east regions are covered..
Ok I have created a tutorial on probability. I am pretty happy with it, it will cover the basics. I just have to work some more to make it flow correct.
However I am still concerned that a lot of it wont make sense without permutation. I am thinking 1st Crash Course would be two chapters (1 hour each):
1. Permutations/Combinations
2. Probability
Only concern: It may be too much to learn both of them on the same day
We will have to schedule another Workshop for other chapters such as coordinate, distance, stats etc.
How does this sound?
:) tomorrow start would be a stretch. But soon...
Online workshop would have combination of the following -
- A online flash presentation (shared with all those who participate), you can take notes.
- Presenter would speak.
- some conceptual and basic problem solving (forums).
- Doubts after each sub section -(preferably chat)
- If there are a lot of doubts, we will roll them over to forums, where you can discuss for a couple of days. That should cover everything.
Hagrid will give more details once he has finalized things.
I think the topics to cover are great, but I would also like to see number theory added to the curriculum if possible.
Is there an estimated cost you have in mind?
Also, March 15th and 22nd at 10AM would work for me. Are these dates still the targeted dates for the sessions? Thanks.
I have added number theory to the list. Its basically a huge topic, what exactly would you want us to touch upon in number theory?
Regarding cost, I believe each session will definitely be less than $10 per person atleast for the permut/probab session, I believe Hagrid would be making an announcement with the exact cost over the weekend.
Thanx a bunch Guardian. Specifically I was hoping that prime factorization, digits, factors (least and greatest common) could be covered.
In practice tests I have noticed many of these types of problems.
Sounds good. I have included Number theory in the list and would cover them in one of the next seminars.
Update on Permutation/Combination: I am almost done writing the tutorial. I just have to work on the flow and create a presentation for it (have to do the same for probablity). So far I am pretty happy with the kind of basics it touches and tools it provides. I would be ready by next week.
So I think we can make the date on Mar 15th for the first workshop. I am still not sure if we should do perm/comb and prob in the same workshop. But we will give it a try this time. Lets see how it goes, I will be looking forward to feedback from you guys.
The first seminar is ready to go on 15th march. The cost per person would be $7 only. We would have limited seats because we want to give the ability to ask questions, which is not possible if we have too many people.
The payment link will be enabled shortly ...
We have changed the timing a bit: 9:30am EST, so that it is a bit convenient for our Indian and Middle-East members who sign up for this workshop.
The announcement is posted here: Workshop Announcement
You can buy the workshop here: Buy the workshop [you have to be a registered member to access this page, registration to ScoreChase website is free].
I will be sending out emails shortly [by tonight] to ScoreChase members. Remember the seats are limited.
Guardian Since GMAT is a timed exam it would be a good idea if there were some methods in which the problems have to be approached to save time and get the correct answer. If people could share their methods along with the Content that is taught it would be of real help.
Any plans for Verbal classes also? Tks
good idea, but that will be a discussion for a later topic rather than this one. Reason is that we want to focus more on cocenpts and get them right.
However, I think people sharing short-cuts would actually be a great idea, but that can be done on the forums in general. the more the audience to these methods the better collection we would have.
Hi iDug,
As the presenter only I would need a mic (to speak). You can convey your questions via forums or chat. Hagrid and I will be available via chat to receive questions if any. So per say you wont be needing a mic.
The presentation will be online - Powerpoint. If you have a computer with speaker you would be just fine. If you have a question, send a pm to hagrid or send an email to support (at) scorechase dot com
they will answer all your queries.
Looks like hagrid closed registration now...good.
I will posting an agenda in PDF format pretty soon.
