How to solve

When positive integer x is divided by positive integer y, the remainder is 9. If x/y = 96.12, what is the value of y?
A. 96
B. 75
C. 48
D. 25

X/Y =96.12---1
and X/y gives remainder 9
so
X = 96 Y + 9----2
from 1 you will get
X = 96.12Y

substituting this in 2
96.12Y = 96Y + 9
0.12Y = 9
Y= 75
hence B

I'm sure you're aware of this form

Dividend = Quotient x Divisor + Remainder

So x = ky + 9 (where k is the quotient when x is divided by y and 9 is the corresponding remainder)

x/y = k + 9/y --------- (1)

Since y > 9 so 9/y < 1

So try expressing 96.12 in the above form

x/y = 96 + .12 --------- (2)

Comparing (1) and (2) we get k = 96 and 9/y = .12

So y = 75
