If y > 0, is y greater than x ?

(1) 3x = 2y
(2) x + y = 5

Ans is C.

From 2, we get:

y = 5-x, if we plug this into 3/2x = y (from 1), we get (5/3)x = 10/3 --> 5x = 10 --> x=2.
Since x=2, we can use (3/2)x = y, and y=3.

Therefore y>x. C is sufficient.


It cannot be (2) alone because y could be 7 and x could be -2, OR y could be 2 and x could be 3.

IMO A.

the initial statement says that y > 0
A says that 3x=2y , so y has to be greater than x

supra, you are right. Hehe, I created a small grid of values...but used y=-1.5 and x=-1...in which case x>y..forgot to NOT use that case because we are told that y>0. Doh! Hate it when that happens.

3x=2y Assume y=1/2 , so for the equation to be true x=1/3 , y > x

x+y= 5 Assume y=4 x= 1 . y>x but vice versa also possible y=1x=4 y< x , so cant be used
