When hypnotized subjects are told that they are deaf and are then asked whether they can hear the hypnotist, they reply, “No.” Some theorists try to explain this result by arguing that the selves of hypnotized subjects are dissociated into separate parts, and that the part that is deaf is dissociated from the part that replies.
Which of the following challenges indicates the most serious weakness in the attempted explanation described above?
(A) Why does the part that replies not answer, “Yes”?
(B) Why are the observed facts in need of any special explanation?
(C) Why do the subjects appear to accept the hypnotist’s suggestion that they are deaf?
(D) Why do hypnotized subjects all respond the same way in the situation described?
(E) Why are the separate parts of the self the same for all subjects?

IMO E
Theorist: The part that replies is different from the part thats deaf.
Challengewould be : Then how did the part that replied, know about the other part being deaf in all the cases of hypnotized ppl ?? .. E asks tat Q! :)

Negate it. If the part that replies answers "yes" instead of NO. what does this proove? that the two parts are not dissociated. hence this question weakens the argument.
(B) Why are the observed facts in need of any special explanation? irrelevant
(C) Why do the subjects appear to accept the hypnotist’s suggestion that they are deaf? this is not the part of attempted explaination. so out
(D) Why do hypnotized subjects all respond the same way in the situation described? If they all did not respond in the same way, can we proof that the selves are not dissociated? NO. so out
(E) Why are the separate parts of the self the same for all subjects? Out of scope. we are talking about how the seperate part function and not wether its same or different across subjects

I did not understand the explanation given by fizzler. Cn you elaborate it. How does the answer yes given by the subject imply that he is part of the system. I am not able to grasp it.

"part that is deaf is dissociated from the part that replies"
how they arrive at the conclusion?
"asked whether they can hear the hypnotist, they reply, “No.” "
whats the next thing you want to ask to continue your conclusion?
"Why does the part that replies not answer, “Yes”?"
what will this answer give you (if you get an explaination for it)?
a proof which can weaken the conclusion.
did you see how the other answers were wrong?
