6 months before I write GMAT...Where to start?

I have recently decided that i want to do an MBA, but have been out of school for a fair amount of time. I really want to crack 700 and get a really high score.

I need advice on what I should study? What kind of study program I should set up for myself? and What should I focus on?

I really need as much information I can possibly get. I think I have more than enough time to study for this and get a great result.

let me know what you think

    Rover,

I can help you, but before that I really need more information from you:

1] What kind of study method do you prefer - Self / Guided

2] How many hours can you devote

3] What do you consider as your strong/ weak points - Math /Verbal

4] Have you gone over the GMAT Syllabus, what seems more challenging

On an average GMAT prep takes 3 months. Some prefer self preparation methods other prefer guided help by joining GMAT courses, Private Tutoring etc.

Lets continue this chat and as I have more information, I will guide you on what steps you need to take.

    Cheers!

I am usually about the self study because then it is more flexible. But i am really not opposed to a guided one. I just need something that will work the best.

I think in way of hours i can get about 10 to 20 hours per week. Doing stuff on a nightly basis and a little during work hours.

As for the weak points i am not sure but i would think the math will be hard considering any math i have done is easy additions for work. I was thinking of maybe picking up a local tudor to help with that, who specializes in the gmat math and is a prof at the local university here. Any thoughts?

I have been reading about how the GMAT works so i am a little familiar with it.

Any other thoughts others have would be great to hear about.

    Thanks for your help

Ok, 10-20 hours of GMAT Study / week on an average ==> about 3-4 months should be enough. However, I have seen that a lot of GMAT aspirants loose their enthusiasm during this course OR are not able to stick to this duration because of work commitments.

If you dont have a math background, I strongly suggest going back to basics for about a week, because most of GMAT concepts are covered in high school Maths. GMAT is usually not about lengthy calculations, but more about tricks, attention to detail and application of different concepts to the same problem.

For Verbal, it differs, most students from India have issues with SC and RC but CR has its own share of worries. Since the study and practice may be boring, its really important to keeping yourself motivated while preparing for GMAT.

Regarding guided help, consider ScoreChase Private Tutoring program. It will give you the flexibility you need in terms of time + no travel + experienced math tutor + the prices are very competitive. It has almost the same experience as a face to face tutor because we use online webmeetings to guide you.

First step would be to know where you are currently. Have you taken GMATPrep yet ? If not I suggest you take GMATPrep to understand what areas you need to work on.

Second step would be to start looking at books. Four most important GMAT Guides in my opinion are:

    Official Guide to GMAT

Then based on what you are missing, we can increase the number of books.
