    bad GMAT score

    Form: Ask a Question
    Posted by: ramsi_ece

I got a low GMAT score (470). I do not plan to retake my GMAT.. I have 7 years of work exp in an IT company, got 93 in TOEFL IBT.

Even if I donot get any aid, is it possible that I can get an admit in top 100 B-schools in the US? where / how should I search for the colleges in which there is a possibility of me getting admit?

Will not doing an MBA within the top schools affect my chances of getting into a good job after I finish my MBA?

    Thanks so much....

    Question on low GMAT Score

    Hi Ramsi,

GMAT is a single component of the MBA application. However, a noticeably low score can be a definite red flag.

Although your TOEFL score will work in your favor, an IT background is quite common among MBA applicants, making it that much more challenging to differentiate your candidacy. Coupled with the fact that most MBA applicant have 4-5 years of work experience might make the Admissions Committee wonder why an older applicant did not do as well on the GMAT.

Is there a reason you are not thinking of taking the GMAT again? If not, and depending on when you are planning to apply, I would recommend that you take it again. If not, do address that in the additional essay, along with any actions you have taken to improve your verbal/math abilities.

Regarding searching for colleges where you have a good chance, this is the first step that My MBA Admit helps clients with. We assess their options through a three-step process, that includes understanding MBA plans, post-MBA ambitions and personal preferences. To be on the safe side, assume you will not get financial aid - and if you don't, what is the financial commitment you are prepared to make? We work with each client to develop a list of schools that is further narrowed down by comparing average candidate profiles to our clients' profiles to gauge their chances of being admitted.

Regarding employment opportunities, an MBA from a top school is a lifelong investment and an everlasting mark of credibility. In general, candidates from well-recognized programs have more opportunities due to the grand reputation of their school. Depending on the kind of career you would like to be in post-MBA, a degree from a well-known university will help more than one that is not as well-known.
