First I rejected all sentences with "them" – I felt it makes the sentence ambiguos and wordier. So A and C are out.
D is grammatically incorrect/incomplete.
Rejected E for two reasons
1) "Was" – Changes the meaning of original sentence
2) The phrase "best known one" – One is redundant.
