Julkap,
One of the best ways to decide on a school is go for a school tour. Many schools allow you to take a few classes to help you decide if you would like to continue in that campus
It is not clear where are you located?
Hi Guys,
On two other websites I have heard some horrible things about the Schulich school of business at York University. Anyone have any info about the school??
Here are some of the posts. Use it as RC exercise ;o)
FIRST POST:
This forum is with regard to Schulich School of Business, York University, Canada.
First, some background. I worked at multinational corporation for 4 years, and graduated from IIT 5 years ago. I question whether to apply to U.S schools vs Canadian and I heard positive things about Schulich. Even though, I was accepted by 3 US schools and 2 Cdns, I accepted Schulich. Worst decision of my life!!!
Schulich is immigrant school that recruits only foreign students/immigrants for high tuition fee!! Almost all students in class (Pakistan, Phillippines, Chinese, India) cannot speak English!! Because of the reputation, few local Canadians (Whites, other) choose to attend the school. And as result, few recruiters decide to recruit from there because of this fierce reputation! Far better is Rotman (Toronto) and Ivey (Western) for Canada who gains top recruiters - financial consulting, investment banking etc.
But still there is still problem of rampant discrimination in Canada. Call the land of opportunity by some, opportunities are far from similar for white Canadian vs. immigrant. Same white doing same job, with exact same education, and exact same credentials is paid $30000 more each year. Please refer to www.notcanada.com. In the U.S it does not work like this!
In my case, I graduate from the school with honours specialization Finance, and am offered only jobs range from $50000-$55000/yr. And no US companies will even consider me! Average salary is $95000 at Rotman and Ivey (all whites, few foreign students I know earns $65000), and salary is $160000+ at top 30 US schools. What make me very sad is I spent $85000 Cdn for Tuition and Board and have big debt load.
GUYS! With good exchange rate (1 Can = 1.08 US) why CONSIDERR to go to Cdn school? Wake up and smell it! USA USA USA!! There really is no better time than NOOW! If I can wake up and do all again, I would go to USA!! Wayyy more opportunity - recruiters and large companies, less discrimination in workplace, FAR higher salary, and less taxes!
Here is LATEST financial times 2007 figures. York has slipped from 18th to 49th, biggest drop of any school on the list . Best of luck! Subin Khatri.

A RESPONSE:
OTHER RESPONSES:
Again Schulich (York University) continues its tumble in the global MBA rankings scene. I am astounded at how low the Schulich MBA graduate salary really is!! The salary is dismal - forget for a tier 1, 2, 3, school but for even a tier 5 school. There are many reasons for this- based on what I've heard from peers and colleagues here in Bay Street, Toronto. First is a very high number of mediocre/poor international students (74%that discourages local business students from attending the institution. Second is its pool of 'underclass' domestic applicants who haven't accomplished anything of significance in their working lives (often with no work experience at all)
If you think about it, there's a process of self selection that goes on when candidates are looking at what MBA schools to attend. Based on their current situation, and position, they look for a school that will drastically improve their salary/job prospects (afterall they're investing a great deal of time, not to mention money). The higher the ending salary, the higher the quality of applicants - it's just that simple folks. If one is happy graduating and earning this 78K; the candidates that apply to Schulich certainly haven't accomplished much. Using myself as an example, I have an undergrad from Queen's and am earning just 15K short of their 'graduates' salary, 2 years out of school. Why would I want to go there?
YET ANOTHER AT THE SCHOOL:
As far as "polish goes", I think that is subjective. There were many students in my Schulich MBA class that I thought to myself "how the heck did this person get in the program" and it did make me cringe thinking this person had the same degree as me and would be going out to the world and potentially lessen the reputation of the school (in reference to international students 75%+ who can't even speak or write proper english)
Guys what is going on here? Is any truth to this? Please help!!!

there is definately some truth about discrimination in canada. my friend is studying in canada and told me not to come to canada at any cost and to go to usa for mba instead. please visit notcanada.com and the picture will be clear.
Although I understand the sentiments of the website like nocanada.com, I dont necessarily agree to the information they have provided. If I look objectively at their front page photo of the PHD cabdriver here are my thoughts:
- Is he really a PHD - I see just an id card not his degree
- Which subject did he complete his PHD in? It could be any subject, he probably wouldnt have got a job in his own country based on that PHD.
- Why did he stick to cab driving? - he always had the option to head back home.
So I will take this information with a grain of salt. Remember after immigration in any country in the world, you will face challenges and resistance. There would be new rules etc. It all depends on the skills you have and how you progress. You cant blame whole Canda for the problems of a few immigrants.
Coming back to the scope of the original post, regarding Schulich, I would go with LDoit's response on that one. Visit the school, make your decision and go forward.

For the benefit of those who cant visit the school and see for themselves,....could you please share the impressions about the school? Are the things mentioend above true?
valiant,
I would advice you to see if the school itself has a forum, or contact some of the alumni of the school itself.
Although julkap sounds like he has experienced this first hand, this post is his only contribution to the forum, so I am not sure about the authenticity of the issues he has highlighted [disgruntled student/alumni?]. If it was a problem every student was facing or experiencing, I am sure other students would be quite vocal about it also [over the internet], [for which I couldnt really find much evidence anywhere].
I was just looking over the Top Canadian B-Schools list and it seems that Schulich school is ranked 2nd in top Canadian Schools [48 worldwide]. To me these sound like pretty good credentials.
It is a pretty reputed School and I wouldnt go by one persons bad experience. I strongly recommend that you contact one of the current students or alumni to get a better picture.
Thanks Hagrid...
I agree with you....I am also in touch with couple of guys...let me see...
Let us know what you find out ....

Hi I am planning to attend Schulich in Fall 2008. Has any one visited the school and can share their feedback - thanks
Hi Guys,
I talked with couple of students in Schulich and an alumnus regarding the school and other questions being raised here...
The feedback i got is not at all discouraging. They all told that the reputation is good but it is not as great as the school projects.....It is anyway behind Ivey and Rotman. Some told me that it is known outside Canada too esp in India when we come back....but one guy told me that one hav to market the school if one is coming back to india...more difficult if he/she is a fresher....
As far as too many local languages and more international students etc etc....none of them told me about any such problem....They are all satisfied with the quality of students in the class....students there do speak in English mostly....and they havent observed any ditch in quality due to lack of interviews....
Coming to descrimination in Canada, there is no such thing.....none of these guys whom i contacted told me about any such general thing going on....it may be corner cases, they told....
And coming to job opportunities, it is not easy for international students, nonetheless it is not a herculean task too....almost all indian students are finding jobs...but need to work a lot for that....but this is so in all other schools too i guess...
These are the opinions I got from them......If anybody else is finding any more info about the school, please share....
Great work valiant![]()
